A user-driven HiFi database

How our lists work

HiFi Log makes some lists for you: "Similar Products" and "Related Products" on product pages and "Similar Brands" on brand pages. These lists are calculated only using the data that users of HiFi Log entered. They are not curated by AI and there is no paid influence by brands or any other 3rd parties.

Similar Products

Similar products are products that share certain characteristics or specifications with the product on that page.
The more data both products have entered, the more likely it is that they could be an alternative for one another.

Which products can be in the list?

Only products that have at least one category in common with the product. Products of the same product family are not shown, because they are versions of the same model.

How is the list sorted?

We compare each product with this product on four things, in this order of importance:

  1. Categories. This is the most important part. Products with exactly the same categories are always shown first.
  2. Characteristics, for example the amplifier type (tube or solid state) or the enclosure type of headphones. Some characteristics count more than others (see the list).
  3. Ranges of numbers, for example the output power (low, medium or high) or the impedance. Only the range counts, not the exact value.
  4. Price. A similar price gives a small bonus. Prices are compared only in the same currency.

When two products are equally similar, a product with the same status (still made or discontinued) and a near release year comes first.

Similar Brands

Similar brands are brands that make the same kind of products as the brand on that page.
The more products and data both brands have entered, the more likely it is that they are alike.

Which brands can be in the list?

Only brands that have at least one product in a category of this brand. We compare only these products. For example, a turntable brand is compared on its turntables, also when it also makes amplifiers.

How is the list sorted?

The most important part is the kind of products. A brand that makes mostly turntables is more similar to another turntable specialist than to a large brand that makes one turntable.

These things also count:

  • Active period: the years in which both brands were in business.
  • Country of the brand.
  • Price level: the typical price of the products. Same currency only.
  • Typical characteristics of the products, for example mostly tube amplifiers. The same characteristics as for similar products count (see the list).

When two brands are equally similar, a brand with the same status (still in business or not) comes first, then the brand with more products in the database.

Not used: the size or the popularity of the brand.

Why is something missing, or in an unexpected position?

The lists can only use the data that users entered. When a product has no data for a characteristic, we cannot compare it, so the product gets no points for that characteristic and can be lower in "Similar Products". In "Related Products", missing data can hide a suggestion. You can help: add the missing data, and the lists become better. Read the contribution guidelines.

"Similar products" and "Similar brands" are updated once a day.
